Sian Simpson was stabbed to death in the street by a girl while trying to stop a brawl. Sian, 18, ran to help her cousin, who was rowing with another girl over a lad said to have got both pregnant But as tempers flared the screaming match between the two girls and their female friends turned violent.Annie Naine, 49, watched in horror as one girl in the yelling, jostling crowd thrust a blade at peacemaker Sian.Advertisement Annie, whose home overlooks the scene, said: "I saw a girl pull her arm back and plunge it forward into another girl. The victim had a white T-shirt on and I could see the blood. I saw her stagger forwards, fall to her knees and collapse."The trouble began when a heavily pregnant teenager and her friends started arguing with Sian's cousin, who recently gave birth. Annie said: "There was a crowd of about 20 girls outside in the torrential rain, shouting and pushing. Two girls were squaring up to one another and one yelled, 'I know the dad of my baby - who's the father of yours? "Someone must have called for back-up because loads more people turned up. A red Fiat arrived with about five girls in it."Then all hell broke loose. Fists were flying and girls were leaning through the car window throwing punches. A windscreen was smashed."There were a few men in their early 20s and they were trying to stop them." In the midst of Tuesday's mayhem Sian arrived in a taxi and tried to restore order.Annie went on: "Then a man ran from a block of flats with a knife. I could see the blade glistening in the darkness."He handed it to a girl and there was a tussle and it ended up on the ground. One of the girls picked it up and I saw her plunge it into another girl."As Sian collapsed on the pavement clutching her side, there was silence.
Annie said: "The shouting stopped then someone yelled, 'Why did you do it?' " The rival mobs fled leaving the knife in the street in Croydon, South London.Sian's father last night told of the moment he heard of the attack.
Joseph Simpson, 41, of Brixton, said his son Carl, 15, rang and said: "Dad, you better come to the hospital, your daughter has been stabbed." Joseph said: "I was there like a shot."
He added: "It doesn't seem real, it just feels like a dream. It's just a numb feeling."
Mr Simpson said his daughter had many friends and would often help him with his courier business. "Everyone liked her. She had loads of friends. She was a quick learner, very intelligent and bright.
"She was always there to help her friends but she was not a troublemaker."
Sian's aunt Cheryl Simpson, 43, said the teenager had rushed from home after a phone call from her cousin.
She added: "Sian left straight away in a taxi. It must have been serious for her to go like that.
"She went there to help but ended up dead. Sian was a beautiful girl. She wasn't in a gang. This was a row over a lad and she tried to break it up."
Sian lived with her grandmother and brother Carl in South Croydon. They also have three sisters. Relatives said their mum Julie is being treated for heroin addiction.
